INCIDENT OVERVIEW
DAMAGE ASSESSMENT

IndiGo A320neo:
Wingtip extension (winglet) sustained damage.

Air India Express 737-800:

Wingtip extension (winglet) damaged.

Estimated Repair Costs: Est $250,000 for minor ground collision damage.
INVESTIGATION FINDINGS

ATC Error: Allowed both aircraft to taxi on intersecting taxiways (A and N4)
violating Kolkata Airport's SOPs.

Pilot Misjudgment: IndiGo pilots failed to keep safe distance and did not
halt despite a visible risk, causing the collision.

Improper Holding: Air India Express reportedly stopped at the ILS Critical
(low visibility) holding point, not the designated one.
PREVENTIVE MEASURES/ LESSON LEARNT
Revised Taxiing Procedures: Kolkata Airport has updated its SOPs
to restrict the use of Taxiway A for departures during peak hours. Departing
aircraft are now directed via Taxiway N to Taxiway P, leading directly to the
runway threshold, thereby reducing potential conflict points.

Enhanced Pilot and Controller Vigilance: The incident has prompted

increased caution among pilots and air traffic controllers, emphasizing the
importance of situational awareness and adherence to safety protocols
during ground movements.

Review of SOPs and Taxiway Markings:Authorities are considering a

comprehensive review of ground movement procedures and taxiway signage
to eliminate ambiguities and prevent future incidents.
LESSON LEARNT

ILS CRITICAL (CAT II/III) HOLD POINT

Purpose: This marking is used to indicate

where aircraft must stop during low visibility
operations, such as in fog or heavy rain, to
ensure runway safety.

Location: It’s placed further away from the

runway than the standard holding position to
ensure clearance from the sensitive areas of
runway instruments like the ILS (Instrument
Landing System).
