Client – Server
Network
A Basic Introduction
Client Server Network :
• A network in which each
computer or
process on the network in
either a client or a server .
Components :
• Clients
• Servers
• Communication Networks
Clients :
Applications that run on computers
Relay on servers for :
- Files
- Devices
- Processing power
Example: E-mail client
- An application that enables you to send
and receive e-mail
Servers :
Computer or process that manage
network resources
- Disk drives (file servers)
- Printers (print servers)
- Network traffic (network servers)
Example: Database Server
- A computer system that processes
database queries
Communication Networks :
Characteristics of client/server network:
It brings user friendly applications to the desktops, giving users greater control
over timing and style of computer usage, and allowing departments to be more
responsive to local needs.
Enables databases, network management and utility functions to be centralized.
Commitment to open and modular systems by the user organizations and
vendors.
Networking is fundamental to the operation, thus good network management and
security function are necessary.
Advantages of client/server network:
Centralized user accounts, security and access controls simplify network
administration.
More powerful equipment means more efficient access network
resources.
Simple password login, means access to all resources.
Supports greater numbers of users, or networks where resources are heavily used.
Disadvantages of client/server network :
More costly to install and maintain.
Single point of failure, server goes down the network goes down.
Complex special-purpose software requires appointment of expert staff,
increasing costs.
