Understanding the Environment and Ecosystems

The environment is essential for life, providing air, water, food, and land. Humans impact the environment both positively and negatively through actions like deforestation and conservation efforts. Key components of the environment include biotic and abiotic factors, as well as the lithosphere, hydrosphere, atmosphere, and biosphere, all of which interact to form ecosystems.

GEOGRAPHY CHAPTER 1
DEFINE ENVIRONMENT?

Environment is our basic life support system. It

provides the air we breathe, the water we drink,
the food we eat and the land we live on.

HOW DO HUMANS AFFECT THE

ENVIRONEMNT
Humans affect the ?environment in positive and negative
ways.
Cutting down trees and littering have negative effects
on the environment however protecting endangered
species, recycling and conserving natural resources
HOW DO HUMANS ALTER THE ENVIRONEMNT
?
 Human civilization and technology has affected the
earth, altering the planet forever.
 Car fumes pollute the air, water is stored in dams,
food is bought from stores and served in vessels
and land is used to build factories, companies,
homes etc.
 Humans build things that help them exist in the
environment, these things (example: Transportation,
buildings, food) modify and alter the natural
COMPONENTS OF THE
ENVIRONMENT
The picture depicts that places,
people, things and nature that
surround any living organism is
called environment.
It is a combination of natural and
human phenomena.
BIOTIC VS
ABIOTIC
Biotic and abioticare the two essential
factors responsible for shaping the
ecosystem.

Biotic factors refer to the living

components of an ecosystem.
Biotic resources include all living
organisms from animals and humans, to
plants, fungi, and bacteria.

Abiotic factors refer to the non-living,

chemical and physical components of the
ecosystem.
Sunlight, air, precipitation, minerals, and
soil are some examples of abiotic factors.
DOMAINS OF THE
ENVIRONMENT
Lithosphere : This is the
solid crust or the hard top
layer of the earth. It is made up of rocks and
minerals of soil.
Lithosphere is the domain that provides us with
forests, grasslands, lands for agriculture and
human settlements.

Hydrosphere : This refers to the domain of water. It

comprises of various sources of water and different
types of water bodies like rivers, seas, oceans and
lakes. It is essential for all living organisms.

Atmosphere: This refers to the thing layer of air

that surrounds the earth. It protects us from the
harmful rays of the sun. It consists of several
gases, dust and water vapours.

Biosphere: Plant and the animal kingdom together

WHAT IS AN
ECOSYSTEM?
It is a system formed by the
interaction of all living
organisms with each other and
with the physical and chemical
factor of the environment in
which they live, all linked by
transfer of energy and
material.
