A series of brief, focused online events where charity leaders hear directly from peers who are trying something new in their organisations. Each non-consecutive, hour-long session will feature a different sector leader sharing their practical insights from different approaches they have taken – whether in partnership working, working models, internal culture, campaign promotion, and so much more. Designed to be short, useful, and to the point – these are ideal for busy leaders looking for fresh ideas and real-world examples to learn from their peers.
This Leader Learning Speaker:
Christopher McShane, Head of Corporate Services at Capella
More and more charities are realising that reducing their environmental impact goes hand in hand with delivering on their wider mission and values. Capella have been on their own journey to understand what becoming a Net Zero organisation really means in practice, and we’re keen to share what they have learned along the way.
In this session, Christopher McShane, Head of Corporate Services, will talk about why Capella (and its services Sleep Action and Teens+) decided to make Net Zero a priority and how that commitment has shaped the way they work. He will reflect on the challenges and steep learning curve the organisation faced at the beginning, from understanding the complexities of measuring their carbon footprint, to setting realistic goals and creating their Carbon Reduction Plan. Christopher will share some of the practical steps they’ve taken so far, the tools and approaches that helped, and the moments that made them stop and rethink their assumptions.
They will also explore how becoming a Net Zero charity has brought wider benefits such as strengthening their partnerships, improving their funding prospects, and boosting staff engagement through initiatives like their Green Champions network. Just as importantly, Christopher will be honest about the lessons they’ve learned such as the importance of collaboration, the need for accessible and inclusive communication, and why progress will always matter more than perfection.
Whether your organisation is just starting to think about sustainability or already taking steps toward Net Zero, this session offers a practical, down-to-earth look at what it takes for charities to make meaningful environmental change, and why it’s worth the effort.
