Autism is a severe developmental disability which is usually diagnosed around the age of three. It results from a neurological disorder which interferes with brain development; primarily in the parts of the brain that control perception, verbal communication and social interaction. The term autism is a very broad catch term for a very complex syndrome. Autism is a spectrum disorder and is identified as the  acronym ASD … for Autism Spectrum Disorder. Individuals with ASD exhibit characteristics distributed over a broad spectrum: from people profoundly affected with extremely limited independent life skills to those who are seemingly “mildly” affected and function more or less effectively. Each person on the autism spectrum is unique in his or her own way. As the saying goes: “If you’ve met one person with autism … you’ve met one person with autism.”

I am sitting through my day still in shock over the death of  Whitney Houston. I have a certain level of sadness as if a member of my family passed away.  Some may think that is crazy but when someone or something has touched your life in some profound moments, you grieve that life.

Whitney Houston’s music has touched me throughout my life.   “I Wanna Dance with Somebody” reminds me of a guy I was crushing so bad on and I damn near fainted when he asked me to dance to that song.  “Greatest  Love of All” reminds me of my little sister. She would sing this song ALL DAY, EVERY DAY.  LOL. I remember she would put a towel over her head as if she had long hair and grab her karaoke mic and sing as if she was Whitney herself.   “All the Man I Need” reminds me of my best friend (God rest of soul). This was her favorite Whitney song. She would get over excited when when she heard this song. 🙂

And the most profound song in my memory is ” I Didn’t Know My Own Strength”.  This song helped me through my most darkest moment.  I lost my brother in the Jan. 2010 and that is something I struggle with everyday but during those few months after his death, I was at my lowest point to where I didn’t know if I wanted to go on with my life and other thoughts going through my head.

One day, a friend sent me the link  to Whitney’s performance of “I Didn’t Know My Own Strength” on the Oprah Winfrey show. As I sat there with tears streaming down my face and watching  her sing that song with such emotion, convicton, and faith. I begin to think that here is this woman,who has battled addiction,abuse and other things were weren’t privy to, standing in front of the world strong, humble,and head held high.  SHE DIDN’T BREAK!!!!

And when she sang these Lyrics my life changed for the better: ( lyrics has been edited, and extra chorus was cut out)

RIP Whitney Houston, I do not mourn the celebrity. I mourn the incredible gift that you allowed yourself to share with the world.  I look pass your demons and battles and will not jugde or base that on your character.  I celebrate the memories that you have touched with your voice and music. You will never be forgotten because everytime one of your songs play I am sure I have a memory behind it.  Your soul is at rest.
