ProbeNet is an active measurement platform, constantly testing IPs from points of presence around the globe to generate real-world insights.
Measurement Process
- Each PoP runs diagnostics like ping, traceroute, and protocol handshakes (e.g., TCP/UDP).
- Traffic is routed through our enrichment pipeline where RTTs, headers, and behaviors are aggregated.
- Outputs feed every IPinfo product, including geolocation, privacy detection, ASN context, and stability tracking.
Deployment Strategy
- PoPs are strategically placed where RTTs are inconsistent, sparse, or noisy, including hard-to-measure regions like North Africa or the Pacific Islands.
- We'll place probes in ASNs with just a /24 block (256 IPs) if latency patterns indicate instability or blind spots.
- ProbeNet is maintained by a cross-functional team that:
- Sources and negotiates servers
- Identifies high-value ASN/region gaps
- Automates provisioning and uptime
Ongoing Improvements
- We maintain constant measurement with the clear goal of reducing RTT measurements across as many ASNs as possible.

Achieving Data Accuracy Beyond ProbeNet
While ProbeNet is foundational to IPinfo's accuracy, it’s only one layer in a multi-source system designed to validate, enrich, and maintain our datasets. We combine active measurements with complementary methods to ensure both breadth and depth of coverage.
Registry + WHOIS Data
We ingest and normalize RIR records, taking care to flag outdated or vague entries while preserving useful attribution data.
Partner-Verified Signals
We collaborate with trusted network operators and commercial providers to ingest verified geo, privacy, and carrier information.
Behavioral & Heuristic Models
For non-responsive IPs, we infer likely characteristics using patterns across adjacent IPs, historical RTT baselines, ASN behavior, and infrastructure signatures.

Each data point is tagged with provenance and freshness indicators (e.g., geo radius) to help customers gauge trustworthiness.
