Bio

Risen from the valleys of Dartmoor, Kwilkyn is the result of an adventurous mind trapped in a homebody. Joseph Crosher (the songwriter behind the pseudonym) uses Kwilkyn as a tool to introspect what he would otherwise push down. With strong themes of nostalgia, loss and romance Kwilkyn explores his sense of place and self. Kwilkyn navigates the juxtaposition of feeling comfortable yet trapped and wraps it up in a package full of indie-folk with fragments of grunge tossed in.

An artist in folk fusion

Born and bred in the rugged valleys of Dartmoor, Joseph Crosher had an infatuation with music from an early age. The mysticism surrounding the foggy moors combined with picking up the fiddle at six has created a fascination of how sound can explore the relationship between body, soul and place.

Transitioning into adulthood, Joseph left his home in the Westcountry to study Politics and philosophy, topics that often find subtle avenues into his songwriting.

Meanwhile, his artistic side was flourishing in the four piece rock band “Feed The Mammoth” who established themselves in the local scene with their victory in Battle of the Bands. During this time he was introduced to the Birmingham music scene - a stark contrast to his countryside roots.

However, Joseph stuck to his bread and butter by playing violin in a sea shanty band and continued to work on his solo project, Kwilkyn.

With influences ranging from Pinegrove, to Jeff Buckley, to Sticky Fingers, to Wunderhorse, Kwilkyn’s music indulges in juxtaposition. The subtle blending of Indie-Folk and rock music parallels the lyrical themes of feeling comfortable yet trapped. Joseph loves playing with contradiction within place, romance and philosophy. This is reflected by his eclectic mix of nostalgic genres.
