Specifically, the Shelf is actually two things: a Featured Shelf and up to 6 Mini Shelves. Each Mini Shelf can hold up to 6 books. Since there is a maximum of 6 Mini Shelves, only 36 books can be on the Mini Shelves at a time. The Featured Shelf is a carousel which shows one Mini Shelf at a time, so it shows up to 6 books at a time.
So, if you buy a spot on The Shelf, your book will be on the Featured Shelf by default at a minimum of once every six days. If there are fewer than 7 books on Mini Shelves, it will be on the Featured Shelf every day. If there are between 7 and 12 books on Mini Shelves, it will be on the Featured Shelf every two days, etc.
The Featured Shelf shows up on our homepage on all resolutions. The Mini Shelves show up on our homepage on iPad and higher resolutions.
The Shelf has two parts: the Featured Shelf and the Mini Shelves. On top is the Featured Shelf, a carousel in a prominent position that shows one shelf at a time. Underneath it are the Mini Shelves that show all the books on The Shelf. There is a maximum of 6 Mini Shelves, each containing up to 6 books each. We fill up a shelf with 6 books before adding the next shelf. So, if there are 20 books on The Shelf, there will be 4 Mini Shelves, containing 6, 6, 6 and 2 books, respectively.
Note that the Featured Shelf is always on our homepage, on all resolutions of screen. The Mini Shelves are hidden when the homepage is displayed at smaller than iPad width.
