Growing Out of Anime... Or Just Growing up?

It might sound cliché, but I just don’t get as hooked on newer anime the way I used to 10 years ago lol. There was something about that era that just hit differently.
Maybe I’ve just grown out of that phase. But whenever I rewatch the old stuff, it still hits just as hard. The nostalgia, the soundtracks, the emotions. It all comes rushing back like nothing’s changed.
That said, there are some recent anime I really loved. 86 (still 4 years old), Kusuriya no Hitorigoto, and Frieren really stood out to me. So I guess it’s not that newer anime can’t be great. It just takes something special to make it stick like the old ones did.

That's normal as you get older you get bored with anime, i got bored with anime like 15 year ago around 2011 (mostly because of shounen overdose) and nowadays i mainly watch ecchi only because other genres bore me to tears and ecchi is the only genre that i can tolerate watching anymore. (i need a constant display of boobs and butts to be entertained) i don't care about story, animation or anything, except for fanservice and nudity to keep me hooked.

Neither it just is being exposed to more and having dulled reactions in general as well as likely not expanding out enough into things you previously would have not given a chance as well as maybe just having more of other stuff to do.

I'd say just growing up.

Having started anime as a 30-something, I recognize that the vast majority is made to appeal to people younger than me, but I'm still enjoying a lot of anime.

At the same time, entertainment media simply don't hit as hard now that I'm older. Movies, TV series, music, video games... Most of the "special" stuff that almost shaped and defined my tastes is from my teens or early 20s.

When you get something for the first time it doesn't feel so special. But after spending a long time with it, it turns into something nostalgic. Its true that newer animes don't hit because we get sensitized to that stimulus after watching animes for 10 years, but rewatching our initial animes brings back that old feelings we miss anew.

I feel like part of it is just that anime has a limited collection of ideas and so after a while it gets less interesting. The 50th isekai about a guy with a harem who's OP doesn't hit as hard as the first one. Same with battle shounen, romcoms, CGDCT, mecha, magical girl, etc. Once you've seen all the ideas that are being used watching them play out in a different order or in a different combination isn't as interesting.

I disagree with the idea of "growing out of anime", since there are so many different kinds of anime that there will always be something good for anyone who enjoys watching fictional stories, even if you grew out of some specific genres or tropes. It's more likely that you just prefer the 2000s-2010s anime aesthetic over the current era.

If you enjoyed those anime from the 2020s, I'm pretty sure there are plenty more you'd enjoy as well. The matter is: is it worth digging through the mud in order to find the gems?

It happens. Usually due to lower dopamine levels, things becoming more ordinary, maybe not having enough time for it anymore.

You got to stop watching anime based on scores, and start watching based on your interest. Try something unique like Milky Holmes or Moetan.

It's a combination of factors. With age comes anxiety that we need to be doing other things. But it's also true that the trends in anime has changed a number of times throughout the decades. It seems Japan has lost some of the appetite for the mecha and political epics that marked the prior decades with Gundam Seed, Eureka 7, Code Geass, Death Note, maybe even Attack on Titan falls into this category. And instead, most of the new shows are now unapologetically escapism, even more than it was before, with all these low effort isekais and fantasy slice of life shows (no, I'm not talking about Frieren). There are still good anime for sure, but much less are catching my attention.

People don’t grow out of anime.
They grow out of time, energy, and patience.

Me?
I'm built different. Im a long‑term viewer with a 28‑year streak and zero signs of slowing down.

@RainyEvenings here we're going for 33/34 years, with only one slight pause after watching shitty Go Princess Precure more than a year ago. 33/34 because I'm old and I can't remember it I started in 1992 or 1993.

I don't want to blame the moder anime... but I kinda am. maybe its because modern anime had shaped differently toward Gen Z and Alpha.
back in 2000's most of the anime don't just have a nostalgic appear, but something unique to that time that I can still rewatch and relive them, while those day I find it hard to find anime with the same caliber.

Just phases. Sometimes you don't get hooked up as much.

The cliché "grow out of anime" is so much spread around, you might think it applies to you when it does not. Some people may stop anime for a while then come back to it a few months/years later. They claim they grow out of anime then they tell us how they were wrong. They just needed a break.

When you look at some genres, production rates are very different. You've got plenty of long-running action but it's harder to find others.

It seems you like story-heavy anime, probably look for anime based on light novels/visual novels, detective/thrillers, or heavy romance.

I agree it's harder to find anime you really enjoy past the 500 landmark because you'll have seen most of the popular ones (within your tastes).
Heed, heed, above all, step soft, step light,
We walk along the road, we walk through the night.
Heed, heed, the kind footsteps towards you,
They walk on your path, they walk beside you.

I think it's just as you said. Certain new anime are going to hit for you more than others. So, I wouldn't say that you're growing out of anime. There's just something that you look for in anime that gets you hooked and is probably hard to find in the vast array of new anime. I've honest had the opposite effect. As I've gotten older, some shows that were my favorite when I was younger just don't hit the same as I've gotten older. But there have been others that I still do really enjoy like Hajime no Ippo and Dragon Ball Z.

Yes, you have nostalgia. You explicitly mentioned the vibes are different when you rewatch stuff. As long you don't delude yourself into thinking everything before you watch was a masterpiece and now its trash, you're fine. It has nothing to with age or growing up.

@User-Name back in the 2000s', Anime had shaped towards millennials, your age demographic, that's the reason.

I'm not millennials though I'm Gen Z I was born in 93'. lol you right I am Millennials.
though I fee I have grown out from anime more due how much weak anime there are. after watching LogtH it's just feels like anime recycling ideas.
I'm still watching anime though, just not as used to watch.

I mean, that happens with a lot of things, not only anime. It's like when people say that they cannot get into modern music, or that modern NBA is worse than before, football 10 years ago was more exciting, etc. Maybe there is some truth for some of these claims but ultimately it is a matter of kind of nostalgia but not exactly. I don't know your age, but people generally like things more from when they were teens and young adults (so probably 12-25ish years) because they are forming their identity, your emotions and responses to things are stronger, nostalgia plays a part as well and something that is rarely talked about (although you apparently don't suffer from it that much) is that you simply remember things better after your early adult years. So you'll have a harder time remembering the bad parts of your favorite anime from 10 years ago or when you were a teen/young adult.

If you are indeed older than what the paragraph I wrote is implying then perhaps you are a little burned out by the medium or you don't enjoy the trends/tropes of modern animes. Again, nostalgia always plays a part, things are not fresh and new anymore as well.

Unless you find Anime that are Writted like a Non-Fiction novel instead of a saturday Cartoon Show. I start to Watch the 2nd Season of Vinland Saga because the First Season is Veering too much on the Entertainment Factor.

@stefanoiulli1999 I don't know exactly if you are asking if there are literally animes without tropes or if I'm implying that every modern anime uses the same tropes? Either way, what I meant is that trends exist. Not every anime will have the same tropes but tropes exist because a big number of shows use the same or very similar ideas, developments, etc. if they are from the same genre or period of time (because those ideas are confirmed to work). So if you don't like tropes that are used a lot in modern animes then it is logical to think that you'll like the animes themselves less.

P. S. Basically every anime has tropes, tecnically any type of story, development and character has already being done in some way. Even desconstructions need the tropes to being with.

@DarkFirefly72 Even news stories and history books have their tropes if you think about it. Because tropes are not exclusive to fiction.

@stefanoiulli1999 Yeah, definitely. It always has been interesting to me how tropes evolve throughout time in a certain medium (or even irl). If you analize anime/manga works you can easily grab how japanese culture works, tropes that were created due to the limits of the mdium itself, how japanese society changed over time, etc.
