He looked across the table
The candle light danced in her hair
And handed her a ring
strange letters meeting her stare
Like some ancient language
Reached to her to understand
“What does it say?” she said
Turning it around in her hand
“Those aren’t letters”
”they are numbers and they say a lot”
They started to take shape
Slowly unfolding the plot
It was a long ride home
And it was all becoming clear
What it meant, what it was
The driver spied the ring in his rear view mirror
“Hey, wait. You aren’t one of those are you?”
Evil in numbers
“You people and your numbers”, he began to jeer
“There’s nothing to believe in sir, the numbers are the numbers”
And you can let me out right here
Right here
Evil in numbers
They’d been waiting a long time
She was like a messiah of the damned
She understood the numbers,
and was able to distill them in a way that they might understand
But it will not be an easy job
And the numbers they were blasphemy
Because she may not be accepted
In a world full of lies and personal constructs of reality
Evil in numbers
And so she went forth into the world
This messiah of the damned
To speak through the numbers, the only truth
But the world did not understand, they would never understand
And she dreamed she lived in a world
where truth was gospel and not gospel the truth
where truth was gospel and not gospel the truth
the numbers are the numbers
the numbers are the numbers

The Race

Tiny pebbles in my running shoes
As I tried to keep pace
dripping sweat along the dusty path
why I am I in in this race
Her perfection
It was like her feet never touched the ground
A gazelle in the open savannah
Watching her effortless bound
she swirled around me in circles
as I tried to match her pace
in a flash of hot pink smoky dust
Her cadence and her grace
I knew I was being played
Could I outrun it for a little bit now?
Why I am I in in this race?
The path came to a fork,
and I saw water in the distance
Rays of light upon the waves
as I stopped to watch them dance
And then the water began to swell
until finally at my feet
Lifting me up and, and across the finish line
washing away the street
Looking back in triumph
I saw a figure far behind me
Struggling to swim in the sapphire blue
struggling so hard to deny me
The more YOU struggle the less YOU gain
disappearing as the sea turned red
flames shot out and it was gone,
and a calm blue sea in its stead
As I stood there, on the podium
Seeing now, what success is
I read the inscription on my medal
“Run your own race, or get lost in someone else‘s”

Soul Heist
04:42
|
|||
|
It was his favorite day
She prepped for something grand
She tried to understand
why he had given it all away
She was frazzled and let down,
He said he’d make it right
A promise he could never keep
no matter how hard he tried
He was tapped
his energy sold to this endless pit
He’d never be enough,
While was trapped by IT
IT had a glow that drew him in
He didn’t fight it, in fact he’d invite it
the death of all they had binding
for it was blinding
Soul Heist
It was a beautiful child, or a dark mistress
with an agenda nonetheless
Smile of an angel, eyes dark as coal
What better way to heist his soul
She would not let it destroy them
it would make them stronger
But the more that she resolved
the more IT took
til she could hold on no longer
Its teeth were sharp
The vigor drained from his mind
Until he’d forgotten who he was
And was impossible to find
Crying she tossed the things he gave her
All of the tokens
Of dreams now broken
Never again to see the light
Never again to kiss goodnight
IT smiled, but felt no cause to celebrate
As it sized up the next, to recalibrate
he was, just another soul collected
he was, just another heist perfected

To Forgive or Not
No one locks their doors in this college town
My roommates were out I was home
He was back in town, to get me back
But I told him I’d moved on
he walked in the front door and was seeing red
I was fast asleep, alone in my bed
he ripped off all the covers but I couldn’t scream
he was strangling me with my sheet
I scrambled for the phone
He laughed and knocked it down
makeup smeared through my tears
“Look at to you, you’re not so pretty now”
And the sheet left burn marks on my neck
the blouse I wore the next day covered the rest
but it couldn’t hide the terror he left in my heart
that helpless fear, this lasting scar
A few years later I received a call
he was on that 9th step, and sorry for it all
But I told him he’d never be forgiven
I never could do it, I could never ever forgive him
Then came that day, the twin towers did fall
And several days later my old roommate did call
She’d married his brother, and so she had heard
And he’d been in that tower, and never emerged
and so a new nightmare began that day
A whole new reason to ponder my ways
Whatever you been through, whatever you’ve got
The question you’ll face, is to forgive or not

Perfect destiny
04:10
|
|||
|
She couldn’t help but think about it
“Maybe today is the day”
her morning ritual,
she did in the usual way
The sun so smoldering blue
Upon the messenger’s feathers did shine
And then it came, those awaited words
“We are calling you up, it’s you time”
As the majestic bird
takes off they're shocked, but not she
she knew all along
and she faced it so confidently
following the instructions
She arrived exactly ay the right time
And there he was, not exactly what she expected
but in many ways, quite sublime
It hurt
Only if you move
you need to keep steady
So she kept her motions smooth
until he was ready
His great jaw was unhinged
She closed her eyes and smiled
almost delirious
As she slid down his throat undefiled
and there was a beautiful hush
as the world slipped away
this glorious passing, had so served her king
And she knew she was meant just for this day

She was amazingly awake
after so little sleep on board
Out the window was every star
just pick one and its yours
She clutched the cup of her mint tea
and began to make a list
Of everything she wanted to see
to touch and experience
The cup nearly leapt from hand
They it'd be rough at times
barely noticing at all
cuz she didn’t mind no she didn’t mind
She was putting together a plan
7 days and much to see
Ready to explore this newest planet
HD 109833
But luck had come her way
had placed her in the lottery
on the first shuttle there
taking every opportunity.
A woman walked by and asked if she was comfy
“Yes”, as she clutched her notebook, “I’ve got everything I need”
“This is everything I’ll do once we touch down
On HD 109833”
Her excitement was palpable and the woman laughed
it’ll just be a few minutes more
“Gather your bags to disembark
and please stand clear of the door….”
Her voice trailed off as they touched down
With a bump that nearly shook her from her seat
She opened her eyes, as the train stopped in Akron
closing her book “Journey to HD 109833”
