Class Level Overview

Beginner :

For those who are new to burlesque or want to polish their skills.

We recommend that all students start with a dedicated beginner class to learn the history and essential moves of burlesque. If you have a dance or performance background, one or two terms of beginner may suffice, though you’re welcome to take as many beginner classes as you choose as the routines change each term.

Open / All Levels :

Suited to absolutely everyone! Once you’re comfortable with your skills learnt in Beginner classes, move to Open classes to try new styles and develop further. If a Beginner class doesn’t suit your schedule, start with an Open class.

Intermediate :

Suited to those with 2+ years of Burlesque experience and/or dance training in modern styles. Expect to encounter floor work, as well as dance based elements such as kicks and turns in these classes.

Advanced :

Suited to those with 3+ years of Burlesque experience and/or significant, recent dance training in modern styles. Expect to encounter dense choreography, floor work, as well as dance based elements such as kicks and turns in these classes.

ROCK SHOWGIRLS
Hot, heavy, and full of attitude, this rock showgirl routine to Barracuda by Heart is all about big, confident movement with a playful, dangerous edge. Expect bold showgirl lines, gritty grinds, and hard-hitting choreography for showgirls keen to break the mould.

Sink into something sexy with this chair routine to Dreamgirl by Tanerelle, where slow, sensual movement melts into flowy and unapologetically hot tease. Designed to bring some spice to the stage, this routine focuses on seducing with intention, exploring delicious shapes and turning up the heat.

FEATHER FAN DANCE
Set to Lovely by Billie Eilish and Khalid, this open-level feather fan routine is soft and emotive with a slow, intentional build. Gentle on the body and rich in expression, we’ll focus on refining fan technique and channelling emotions into our movement.

CABARET SONG & DANCE
Step inside the Kit Kat Club and bring Don’t Tell Mama from Cabaret to life with this theatrical song-and-dance class. It’s wide-eyed innocence one moment, sultry nightclub singer the next. Expect playful storytelling, expressive faces and secrets worth keeping… “Mum’s the word.”

THE CATBIRD SEAT: ONLINE ACT COACHING

Someone in “The Catbird Seat” is in a position of advantage and that’s exactly where you’ll be by the end of this course.

You can access this act development program from anywhere in the world, guided by Lila Luxx – an Australian burlesque doyenne who has successfully mentored emerging & professional performers to achieving their personal performance goals and crowns.

This 6-week online coaching program is designed for intermediate and advanced performers developing (or refining) one or more acts who want expert guidance without the weekly studio commitment. SLOW BURN
Phoenix Knight invites you to delve into the low light with a slow burn to Hush by The Marias. You'll glide through grounded floor work, deliberate touches, and eye contact that lingers a beat too long. This class is about control: knowing when to move, when to hold, and when to let the audience come to you. Bring your heels, knees pads, and your composure - and watch the temperature soar by the time we're through.

This term we’re diving into gothic romance fantasy with Chains of Love by Charli XCX from the new Wuthering Heights film, and yes, we are absolutely leaning into the drama.

Think windswept longing, smouldering looks, and that delicious tension of wanting someone you probably shouldn’t because maybe they’re your half sibling? Idk, we don’t judge.

It’s passionate, cinematic, and just self aware enough to be cheeky instead of tragic.

ANARCHY! Burlesque is political – it’s artistic self expression, using our bodies exactly how we see fit, in opposition to the expectations of patriarchy. So let’s shimmy about it! Join Mara Maraschino in this very special routine – with a performance outcome at alt.ANARCHY at The Brightside on 7 May. Join a star studded cast in this community favourite show, all about giving the middle finger to the patriarchy and celebrating the power of love over hate. This 60s-styled routine is girly grindhouse glamour at its most unrepentant! This is the burlesque class for you! Join Mara Maraschino in this glamourous, vintage-styled routine where we spend the entire song teasing out of one garment only: your robe! Are you ready to create your burlesque persona and make your solo debut?

This masterclass is designed for students with several burlesque classes under their belts; the ones who are on the cusp of creating a solo act and hitting stages! This class is ideal for soloists, duos or groups who want to create a new act or polish an existing one. During the course, your tutor will work one on one with you to bring out your performance potential, guiding you step by step through act creation while developing your onstage persona. Headliners also includes practical theory on how to get booked, managing social media, budgeting, building an effective website and more!

Gloves, gown and boas, oh my! Whether you want to take to the stage, build your confidence or learn some techniques for everyday life, this class is for you. Beginner Burlesque will teach you the basics of the art of the tease! From walking with poise, confidence (and a little bit of attitude), to a classic strip tease routine that lets you step into the glittery world you've been dreaming of, burlesque performer Cello Bordello will teach you the techniques and how to have a bit more fun with the body you've been blessed with, in a fun, comfortable environment with like-minded students.

VINTAGE JAZZ CHORUS GIRL
Ever wished you were a dancing performer in one of those fabulous 1930’s MGM movie musical numbers? Live out your fantasies with this class! You will learn authentic vintage jazz dance steps to the song 'Do Something' by Tom Saunders and the TomCats and perform a chorus girl style routine with those iconic movie inspired formations. This routine and class don’t involve strip tease, so perfect for those who are a little shy or for those that have a nostalgic heart for vintage music and dance.

Private coaching can often be the key to taking your concept or stage persona to the next level!

These sessions can focus on narrative, choreography development, presentation & performance skills, polishing and refining an existing act, creating a new routine or competition prep. Past students coached by our tutors include winners of Miss Burlesque Queensland, Miss Burlesque Brisbane, Miss Burlesque Gold Coast, Miss Burlesque Perth, Burlesque Idol Brisbane, Burlesque Idol Newcastle, title holders of the Miss Pinup Australia competition and many more.

Whether you are working on an existing act, creating something new, developing your persona or preparing for competition season our tutors are here to help you think out of the box, calm your nerves, meet criteria and have you bumping and grinding bigger and better than ever!

Remembering that our motto for Covid safe classes is “Get in, dance, get out”. Please do not congregate or chat in close groups in or around the studio.
If you are displaying any cold and flu symptoms including but not limited to fever, sore throat or cough, please do not come to class, filming or the Ball.
If you are required to isolate under current close contact guidelines, please do not come to class, filming or the Ball.

We are acutely aware that our new normal means that plans are now always subject to change and we ask you to trust that we will do our best to deliver content in a way that maintains the spirit of the Academy while keeping you all safe.

When government restrictions are put in place, updated or changed, often at the last minute, we will continue to adapt and go above and beyond to continue our course work.

We understand that these changes are not to everyone’s liking, however it’s very much out of our hands. We are a small collective of artists adapting in order to survive during a global pandemic. We thank you for your patience and understanding.
