Community Supported Agriculture (CSA)
Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) is a farm model that connects farmer and consumer more intimately whereby members buy shares of the farm's harvest either through weekly or full season subscriptions in advance and share in both the risk and the bounty throughout the growing season. This approach invests in and supports small scale farmers and cultivates a deeper connection to our food sources and our community.
Growing Community, Growing Together: A Partnership for All
We are excited to enter our second year of partnership with the African Alliance of Rhode Island and Gather Farm that’s all about bringing people together through food, culture, and community. Through our CSA program, we grow a diverse range of produce that speaks to the rich, cultural heritage of our communities.
The African Alliance of Rhode Island has long been dedicated to empowering African immigrants and refugees with a focus on food, art, culture, and health. Gather Farm has been a hub for ecological food growing, community building, and meaningful experiences in art, food, and farming. By joining forces, we’re not just growing food — we’re cultivating relationships, sharing stories, and creating experiences that unite people from all walks of life.
Together, we grow more culturally familiar foods for some, while introducing new and exciting produce for others. It’s a celebration of diversity, connection, and the power of shared meals. This CSA is more than just a subscription; it’s a chance to support local farmers, try something new, and be part of a movement that values inclusivity, sustainability, and community-building at its heart.

Why joining our CSA matters:
Preserving Farmland: Since 1940 Rhode Island has lost 80% of its productive agricultural land. Between 1965 and 1990 the town of Johnston lost 55% of its agricultural land. Your membership helps ensure this special piece of farmland – farmed for over a century and one of the closest farms to RI’s urban core – is protected from development.
Supporting Farmers: Community Supported Agriculture provides job security to small scale farmers who are some of our most important community assets and the key to local food security.
Investing in Families: Our CSA membership ensures families have access to nutrient dense foods grown by farmers they know and trust. Our farm only uses organic growing practices so you can be sure there are no chemicals used on the fruits and vegetables you will be eating.
Growing Community: Joining a CSA is a great way to meet like minded people and to be a part of a community that shares your values of knowing where your food comes from. It’s a chance to be part of something positive that benefits not only you and your family but the greater community as well.
Giving Back: Gather Farm donates produce every week to families struggling with food insecurity in our community. Everyone deserves access to fresh, healthy food and it is our pleasure to give back to those that need help getting it.

FAQs

Gather Farm partners with the African Alliance of RI (AARI) and their network of talented farmers. Your produce will be coming from the fields at Gather Farm as well as AARI’s Bami Farm in Johnston and Southside Community Land Trust managed plots at Urban Edge Farm in Cranston. All produce is grown in healthy soils and without the use of synthetic inputs and all your farmers are committed to farming the way nature intended.

A full share is ideal for a household of 4-6 people (or maybe a few enthusiastic vegetable eaters!) and typically provides an average of 14 items per week over the course of the growing season. A half share is usually best suited for 2-3 people and provides about 7 items per week.
When investing in a CSA you are buying into both the risks and the rewards of the small-scale, local farms you are supporting. That can mean pivoting when there is unforeseen pest damage but also reaping the benefits of a boomer tomato crop!
Produce, in general, follows the arc of the growing season with lighter flavors and amounts in the spring, the most amounts and diversity of produce peaking in mid-summer, and more long-growing and storage crops toward the end of the season. And one of the great benefits of growing in collaboration means we can lean on each other to bring you the best of what we can grow together!
-
While we do our best to anticipate the produce you can expect to be available every week - and we will list those items for you in your weekly CSA member newsletter that goes out every Monday - there is always the possibility of substitutions and modifications. We also generally try to share what our farmers expect to seed, cultivate, and harvest each season on the website but those are sometimes changing, too, depending on what is growing well.
-
Both pick-up days/locations offer a “market style” pick-up where members can pick and choose from a variety of items on the tables. Some abundant produce will be given to everyone but most can be selected based on what you love most. Every week we aim to offer a variety of salad and/or cooking greens and herbs in addition to the seasonal items that are ripe and ready for harvest that week.
If you’d prefer to have a pre-boxed share with a variety of items chosen for you, just let us know! We can have it ready for you for quick pick-up or we can box it up on site.
-
Wednesday (4:00 - 6:00 PM) pick-up is at Gather Cafe located at 519 Atwells Avenue in Providence. The cafe is right next to the Gather Glass glassblowing studio and street parking is available on Atwells Ave or behind the building on Harris Ave.
Saturday (11:00AM - 1:00 PM) pick-up is at Gather Farm located at 380 Greenville Ave in Johnston. Entrance is on the gravel farm driveway between the houses at 378 and 380 Greenville Ave and pick-up is under the pavilion right next to the farm parking lot.
-
We do ask members to select one primary pick-up day/location at the start of the season. That said, if you need to switch your pick-up day one week, that is no problem. It’s a great perk of having two pick-up options! We just ask folks to let us know by email no later than Monday of the week they are switching. A lot of the produce is harvested on pick-up day for our members and there’s a lot of logistics that go into preparing your produce as fresh as it can be every week. We want to make sure we have the right amount of produce harvested on the right days for all our members!
-
We understand schedules can change over the course of the season! It is no problem to switch your pick-up day one week. We just ask folks to let us know by email no later than Monday of the week they are switching. If you can’t pick up either day that week you can invite a friend to pick up for you! And while we can not schedule other pick-up times, know that all unclaimed produce is added to our weekly St. Bellarmine food panty donation in Johnston that supports local families who struggle with food insecurity.
-
If you think you’ll be running late you can always email us and we can box up a share for you to remain on site until you get there. We cannot arrange other pick-up times. Otherwise, all unclaimed shares are added to our weekly St. Bellarmine food panty donation in Johnston that supports local families who struggle with food insecurity.
-
In your weekly CSA member newsletter that goes out on Monday you will find the list of add-on’s (and flavors!) that are available to include in your share that week. You can order directly on our website. If you’d like to pre-order but prefer to pay with cash/check at pick-up just send us an email. All pre-orders due the day before your scheduled pick-up day.
There will also be a limited number of add-on’s available on site at pick-up but these are first come, first served.
We also offer add-on subscriptions at the start of the season for less than buying retail each week! Look for the option at checkout when signing up for your Main Season share.
