Frequently asked questions

WHAT IS NIGHT CAT?

Night Cat: Series for Kids is a comedy-adventure audio series for preschoolers and early primary ages, about a suburban cat who moonlights as a private detective.

The tone is gentle comedy-adventure, with an emphasis on stimulation through the story itself (instead of fast scene changes and high-pitched voices). The series features an original jazz composition as its theme, which gives a playful take on classic detective noir and the old-school PI blues.

Night Cat’s first season has been entirely independently created with zero outside funding (so if you have enjoyed listening, we’d love it if you’d give us a great rating and send it to a friend). Night Cat is free to stream and intends to remain ad-free on podcast platforms.

Where is night cat made?

Night Cat is written, recorded and engineered in Australia, mostly in Sydney (Gadigal), with atmos recorded in various areas of NSW and Tasmania, and engineering completed in Melbourne (Naarm). Writer/creator Jessica Zerlina Leafe is based in Sydney, and the cast of voice actors are based between Sydney and Melbourne. Our original jazz theme was composed by Dom Parker and recorded live at BrandX (City of Sydney Creative Studios) with Dom Parker on double bass, Charlie Snedden on guitars, Bernice Tesara on trumpet and with additional percussion by Heather Darvey and recording day engineered by Jess Smallwood. All writers and artists involved are human, and always will be.

WHICH AGE GROUP IS NIGHT CAT FOR?

Officially, Night Cat is for ages 4-6. But our repeat listeners range from about 3 years old to 7 years old. The series is intentionally written with multi-layered language levels, humour and concepts to engage a variety of young listeners (and adults!)
