Portal Column Design Analysis Report

This document details the design of portal columns for a project. It examines the preliminary design of members using an I-section classification. It also checks the cross-sectional strength, overall member strength, and lateral-torsional buckling capacity of the column section. Maximum shear is also checked.

1.1 Preliminary Design of Members

Try section classification (356x171x45 kg/m I-section)
Outstand compression flange:

b1 b/2 85.5
= = = 8.81 11.3.1 (c)
ff tf 9.7

Limiting width-to-thickness ratio for Class 1 Section

145 170
p =√ = 7.7 < 8.81
fy 355

∴ Compression flange is class 2 section.

Web in combined axial compression and bending:

b1 hw 10.2 + 10.2 + 312

= = = 48.2
fw tw 6.9
Limiting width-to-thickness ratio for Class 1 Section:

1100 1100
p =√ = 58.4 > 48.2
fy 355

∴ Web is a Class 1 section.

Note: Lateral support to the inside flange is provided node 16 through stays from
sheeting rails and at node 18 by the brickwork.
