Standard 2 The teacher much understand individual learner difference and cultural
linguistic diversity.
As a teacher, adapting instruction for students can be impossible if the needs of students
are not understood. Correctly identifying what a student needs is as important as driving
instruction to meet those needs. Through the Frustration Anxiety Tension (F.A.T.) City
Workshop, I learned about students with learning disabilities and ways to better support them in
class. The workshop showed how students with learning disabilities may respond differently to
instruction and practice, which can add to anxiety, isolation and the student being unmotivated in
school. The notes from this workshop can be used as a reference for understanding how students
with learning disabilities can respond and look when in different situations. By understanding
learner differences, such as learning disabilities, I can better inform my instruction to meet the
needs and strengths of each student.
Students with learning disabilities often have different needs than other students, so their
needs can go unmet. Correctly identifying what the student needs, and what strengths they hold,
is a first step in delivering effective instruction. Each class will be filled with students with
different strengths and needs. Students with learning disabilities is a common learner difference
that every class will have, so understanding their needs early can help instruction early on.
Every effective teacher should adapt instruction for the students’ needs, but if those needs
are not understood they can never be met. By completing this workshop, I can now adapt my
instruction based off the needs that students with learning disabilities may have. Frustration,
anxiety and tension can manifest in some students with learning disabilities, and I can now
identify and adapt to meet those students’ needs. By correctly identifying how different students
may respond in situations of anxiety, distraction or risk, I can change instruction so students
aren’t exposed to frustrating situations. Each student will have learning differences that differ
from each other, but understanding the strengths and weaknesses of each student can push
instruction to be the most effective for everyone.
