Power Plant Engineering Individual Assignment –II

Submission Date: 22/06/13

1. A coal sample has a mass analysis of 80.4% carbon, 3.9% hydrogen (H2), 5.0% oxygen (O2),
1.1% nitrogen (N2), and 1.1% sulfur. For complete combustion with 120% of the theoretical
amount of air. Determine:
a) the air–fuel ratio on a mass basis,
b) the amount of SO2 produced, in kg per kg of coal
c) The dew point temperature if the product is at 150 kPa
2. Octane gas (C8H18) at 250C is burned steadily with 30 percent excess air at 250C, 1 atm, and 60
percent relative humidity. Assuming combustion is complete and adiabatic, calculate the adiabatic
flam temperature of the product gases.
3. Calculate the HHV and LHV of liquid propane fuel C3H8.
