Group therapy is psychotherapy in which clients receive psychological treatment together with
others.

Group therapy provides a safe place where people come together to share problems or
concerns, to better understand their own situations, and to learn from and with each other.
Group therapy is often cheaper than individual therapy, as the therapist can treat more people
at the same time, but economy is only one part of its attraction. Group therapy allows people to
help each other, by sharing ideas, problems, and solutions. It provides social support, offers the
knowledge that other people are facing and successfully coping with similar situations, and
allows group members to model the successful behaviors of other group members. Group
therapy makes explicit the idea that our interactions with others may create, intensify, and
potentially alleviate disorders.

(babasahin): Group therapy is very important in the treatment of mentally unstable patients.  It
provides a quick opportunity for input. Ito ay nagbibigay opurtunidad sa mga therapist para
makita o ma-obserbahan ang kanilang mga client's emotional and behavioral responses to a
wide range of people. Ito ay nakakatulong to improve the client's ability to communicate, make
decisions, and assert themselves.

A professionally trained therapist guides the group, usually between 6 and 10 participants, to
create an atmosphere of support and emotional safety for the participants (Yalom & Leszcz,
2005).

Group sessions range 1-2 hours.

(babasahin): Ang mga myembro ay tumutukoy sa mga nais nilang pag usapan during the group
meeting time. Members are encouraged to provide constructive criticism to one another. Giving
feedback entails expressing your own emotions in response to what someone says or does.
May mga nakatakdang regulasyon ng grupo na dapat sundin ng lahat ng miyembro.

most renowned group therapists, Dr. Irvin
D. Yalom, there are 11 key principles of

(babasahin): There are many different kinds of groups with different areas of focus, but they
generally fall into one of two categories:

Two categories:

1) Psychoeducational – These groups are intended to provide members with the information
they need to address or cope with whatever it is that brought them to the group; they are usually
structured with specific topics or modules to cover.

2) Process-Oriented – These groups are more focused on experience, sharing with one
another, and making connections; discussion among the members dominates this group rather
than a set agenda (GoodTherapy, 2013).

Two kinds of group therapy sessions

 In open groups, new members can join the group at any time.
(babasahin): Alcoholics Anonymous, for example, is an open session that welcomes new
members at any time.

 In a closed group, all members join at the same time. Only they participate in the
sessions.

(babasahin): Ang mga myembro na kanilang sa open groups are free to join and leave at any
time. Closed groups have a set number of participants, a set start and end time for group
sessions, and a three- to four-week period. This category includes both inpatients and
outpatients. In the hospital, open and closed groups are frequently used.

(babasahin): The general rules will almost certainly be the same regardless of the sort of group
therapy people attend. For the group's safety and the treatment's effectiveness, certain
regulations must be followed. Additional criteria may apply to certain types of groups, but there
is a basic set of five guidelines that must be followed in order for group therapy to be successful.

Couples therapy is treatment in which two people who are cohabitating, married, or dating meet
together with the practitioner to discuss their concerns and issues about their relationship.

what is to be expected in a relationship. The therapy may focus on such topics as sexual
enjoyment, communication, or the symptoms of one of the partners (e.g., depression).

(babasahin): Couple therapy helps in understanding of different marital demands and requisites
and tries to solve our problems through different techniques. It also allows in establishing
intimacy and care among partners. In terms of duration, it may differ from relationship therapy.
Short-term counseling can last anywhere from one to three sessions, while long-term couples

TREATMENT APPROACHES

1. Behavioral Marital/Couple Therapy

2. Integrative Behavioral Couple Therapy
3. Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT)

*** next slide

Behavioral Marital/Couple Therapy

Origins in behaviorism and is a form of behavior therapy. The theory is rooted in social
learning theory and behavior analysis. The purpose of Behavioral Couples Therapy (BCT) is to
build support for abstinence and to improve relationship functioning among married or
cohabiting individuals seeking help for alcoholism or drug abuse.

Integrative Behavioral Couple Therapy

Consists of two major phases, an evaluation/feedback phase and an active treatment

phase. The typical course of therapy lasts between 6 and 12 months.

Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT)

It is a unique empirically-based approach, based on methods designed to help people

accept, express, regulate, make sense of and transform emotion. Learning about emotions is
not enough; instead, what is needed is for clients to experience those emotions as they arise in
the safety of the therapy session.

FAMILY THERAPY - [Link]

Family therapy involves families meeting together with a therapist. Family therapy is based on
the assumption that the problem, even if it is primarily affecting one person, is the result of an
interaction among the people in the family.

TYPES OF FAMILY THERAPY:

Individual Family Therapy

In individual family therapy, each family member has a single therapist. The whole family may
meet occasionally with one or two of the therapists to see how the members are relating to one
another and work out specific issues that have been defined by the individual members.

Conjoint Family Therapy

The most common type of family therapy is the single-family group, or conjoint family therapy.
The nuclear family is seen, and the issues and problems raised by the family are the ones
addressed by the therapist. The way in which the family interacts is observed and becomes the
focus of therapy. The therapist helps the family deal more effectively with problems as they
arise and are defined.

Couples Therapy

Couples are often seen by the therapist together. The couple may be experiencing difficulties in
their marriage, and in therapy, they are helped to work together to seek a resolution for their
problems. Family patterns, interaction and the communication styles, and each partner’s goals,
hopes and expectations are examined in therapy. This examination enables the couple to find a
common ground for resolving conflicts by recognizing and respecting each other’s similarities
and differences.
Multiple Family Group Therapy

In multiple family group therapy, four or five families meet weekly to confront and deal with the
problems or issues they have in common. Ability or inability to function well in the home and
community fearing of talking to or relating to others, abuse, anger, neglect, the development of
social skills, and responsibility for oneself are some of the issues on which these group focus.
The multiple family group become the support for all the families. The network also encourages
each person to reach out form new relationships outside the group.

Multiple Impact Therapy

In multiple impact therapy, several therapists come together with families in a community
setting. They live together and deal with pertinent issues for each family member within the
context of the group. Multiple impact therapy is similar to multiple family group therapy except
that it is more intense and time limited. Like multiple family group therapy, it focuses on
developing skills or working together as a family and with other families.

Network Therapy

Network therapy is conducted in people’s homes. All individuals interested or invested in a

problem or crisis that particular person or persons in a family are experiencing take part. This
gathering includes family, friends, neighbours, professional groups or persons, and anyone in
the community who has an investment in the outcome of the current crisis. People who form the
network generally know each other and interact on a regular basis in each other’s lives. Thus a
network may include as many as 40 to 60 people.
