Before initiating therapy, obtain a history to determine previous use of and reaction to penicillin or cephalosporins. Person with a negative history of penicillin sensitivity may still have an allergic response. Obtain specimens for culture and sensitivity before initiating the therapy. Observe patient for signs and symptoms of anaphylaxis Assess patient for renal dysfunction and adjust accordingly.

Your healthcare provider will store amikacin as directed by the manufacturer or give you detailed storage instructions if you are storing the medication at home.
