Parnell District School House System

The Parnell District School is implementing a new school-wide house system beginning in 2008 to promote competition, leadership opportunities, teamwork and co-operation among students. The four houses are Aotea (green), Te Arawa (red), Tokomaru (yellow), and Tainui (blue), each representing a historical Māori canoe. Students and teachers will be assigned to houses, and houses will compete for points through various academic, cultural and sporting activities. Points will be tallied and announced every two weeks, with the winning house's flag flown highest on the flagpole. An ornate trophy will be awarded to the overall winning house at year's end.

Children will be allocated a house at the time of enrolment by the office. Siblings /
teachers will be put in the same house as other family members.

Teachers and teacher aides will be assigned houses. This will be done in such a way as
to ensure there are house teachers in each syndicate of the school. Where job shares
exist both job-share teachers will be in the same house.

Role of Teachers Associated with each House

• House Teachers will over see the election of house captains /deputies and hold
timely meetings as decided by staff, which are designed to build enthusiasm
for inter house competitions – e.g. sports days
• To submit points to the house points container after relevant events
• To liaise between staff and students re house sports.
• To assist house captains to run meetings (approx 1x a term, but maybe more
frequently while we get the house system established.)
• To over see any activities that student house leaders organise at house leader
meetings

Allocation of Points
House points in the classroom
The majority decision was that house points were not to be awarded for classroom
behaviour/ work – it was to be a school wide activity.

Smiley Cards/ Voucher- are for citizenship (caring and sharing, self management,
community service etc) in the playground. Smiley cards must have on them the
number of points that have been awarded to each child. These cards are submitted to
the container in the office and collated at the office. Mrs Franklin-Smith will collate
points.
Points for involvement in sporting /cultural activities:

until last. There will also be a lucky draw from the names in the house poinst6
container. (Wendy to organise small $2 dollar shop type prizes.)
The Flagpole
Each fortnight the house flags made by Miss Turner will be flown with the winning
house having their flag at the top, second place next and so on. Mrs Franklin-Smith’s
students are the flagpole monitors.

The Grand Prize: The House Trophy

The vintage and very ornate House Trophy will be awarded at the end of the year to
the captains of the winning house at the end of year prize-giving.
