1. If a ball, a hoop and a solid disk of the same mass and radius all roll with the same linear velocity along a flat
surface with negligible friction, which will have the most energy? Explain in terms of the sum of linear and
rotational kinetic energy.
2. When a hoop and a solid disk roll down a ramp energy is transferred from gravitational potential energy to
kinetic energy. Complete the qualitative energy diagram for both the hoop and the disk, using a key to show
the difference between the hoop and the ball. Neglect friction and use the top of the ramp as position A and the
bottom as position B. Also, determine the energy conservation equation.

3. A 3m diameter 70kg Zorb Ball (hollow sphere with I= 2/3 mr2) rolls down an incline from an initial height of
10 meters. Find its linear velocity at the bottom of the hill if 25% of the initial energy is lost due to friction.
Complete the energy diagram and energy conservation equation. (Hint: it may help to substitute: ω=v/r)

4. If the Zorb Ball from above is filled with a 70kg person (at the middle), how will this affect the moment of
inertia? …The rotational kinetic energy at the bottom? The linear speed at the bottom of the hill?
5. When a (high quality) hot wheels car rolls down a track and through a vertical loop, almost no energy is lost
due to friction. When a small steel ball of the same mass is rolled down the same track, it does not make the
loop… why is this? Explain.
6. (TOUGH---do not worry about this one, unless you are looking for a
m 2 2
challenge) A roll of toilet paper I = (R +r ) is held by the first piece

and allowed to unfurl as shown in the diagram to the right. The rolls has
an outer radius R = 6.0 cm, and inner radius r = 1.8 cm, a mass of 0.200
kg, and falls a distance of 3.0 m. Assuming the outer diameter and the
mass of the roll do not change significantly during the fall determine…
A. The final angular speed of the roll
B. The final translational speed of the roll
C. The angular acceleration of the roll
D. The translational acceleration of the roll
E. The tension in the sheets of TP.
