JAWS
Yesterday’s adventures
found some of the DC
Trip students at the at the
Smithsonian’s National
Museum of Natural
History. This is the jaw of a
mega-toothed shark. This
extinct fish’s full name is
Carcharocles megalodon,
but it’s often called
simply “megalodon” for
its giant teeth. As the
top predator of its day,
Carcharocles megalodon
devoured small baleen
whales, seals, sea
turtles, and large fishes
in shallow seas around
the globe, including the
Chesapeake Bay region.
It may have even swum
where the Museum is
now, back when much
of Washington, D.C. was
underwater. Though it
went extinct 3.6 million
years ago, this massive
shark left a lasting mark
(and lots of teeth!) in
the fossil record. The
megalodon had a
maximum bite force of
around 141,000 pounds.
This is the largest bite
force of any animal EVER!

The Legend of Little Louie
A minister concluded that his church was getting into
serious financial troubles. Coincidentally, while checking
the church storeroom, he discovered cases upon cases of
new bibles that had never been opened.
So at his Sunday sermon, he asked for three volunteers
from the congregation who would be willing to sell the
bibles door-to-door for $10 each to raise the desperately
needed money for the church. Peter, Paul and Louie all
raised their hands to volunteer for the task.
The reverend knew that Peter and Paul earned their
living as salesmen and were likely capable of selling some
bibles but he had serious doubts about Louie. Louie was
