Until 1808, with the arrival of the Imperial family in Brazil, there are few letters with
stamps, known as pre-philatelic, or as the illustrious philatelist prefers

The stamps were linear, with or without a frame, and without a date.
You can find a classification of these stamps in the Stamp Catalog of

THE UNMATCHABLE WORK OF PAULO AYRES

Paulo Ayres was undoubtedly one of the greatest philatelists Brazil has ever had.
A deep connoisseur of the stamps of the Brazilian Empire, Paulo Ayres published in
1937 the known CATALOG OF STAMPS (BRAZIL-EMPIRE),
numbered from 1 to 500.
A work that is hard to find and therefore very valuable.
The introduction in Portuguese, English, and French provides a key to the
classification of stamps (see image below) very useful and used until the
present days.
In fact, the term INSURMOUNTABLE applies well to Paulo Ayres's catalog.
Many have tried to improve the work, and even I made an attempt in
Encyclopedic Catalog of Stamps and Postal History of Brazil. All the
Attempts, including mine, have failed. I myself do not stop consulting the
old Paulo Ayres when I classify a stamp.
On the site we present (when possible) the stamps with the numbering
PAULO AYRES (sometimes simply the abbreviation PA and the number of
catalog.
The work to find a stamp (especially the mute ones) is enormous.
One can spend hours classifying a stamp (mute). Furthermore, it
It must be on the seal and clear. For that alone, they should cost a lot more.
Finding the origin of mute stamps through overletters and fragments is
also an interesting and challenging task. In the known cases, Paulo
Ayres presents the city of origin of certain mute stamps.
One of the biggest challenges for the philatelist and stamp researcher is in
to obtain a good collection of silent and spoken stamps. A task that requires
time, patience, and of course many resources. A considerable challenge that ends up
generating beautiful collections.
