Choosing a gap year after graduating from high school is becoming more popular among young people. This
period, usually a year, is a break from formal schooling that allows students to consider many opportunities and
acquire valuable practical experience before beginning their higher education journey.
A gap year allows students to pursue their hobbies and passions beyond their studies. They can travel,
volunteer, or work in fields that interest them. These practical activities often help them develop essential life
skills and enable them to understand more about themselves and their future goals.
A gap year is another opportunity for self-reflection and personal development. Many students realise that
taking time away from school allows them to improve as individuals and develop adaptability as well as a
better sense of direction. It lets students relax away from academic difficulties and explore various
opportunities before choosing a career in the future or academic field. As a result, they often get back to their
studies with renewed passion and focus.
On the other hand, some critics argue that having a gap year can result in a loss of academic enthusiasm.
Students can reduce their concerns by taking advantage of their gap year to attend online courses or participate
in self-study to keep their minds active.
Ultimately, it is vital to plan a gap year carefully. Students should examine their financial situation, safety, and
how their experience will be helpful to their personal and academic growth. Communication with parents and
teachers can be beneficial for making wise decisions. Indeed, a gap year after graduating from high school may
be an enjoyable experience and a valuable option for those finding a break from traditional school to get real-
world knowledge.

VII. Read the following passage and choose the correct answer to each of the questions.
When we use the word “career” to talk about a person’s working life, we mean that he or she has had a series of
jobs in the same field, for example, banking, usually with a number of promotions, so the person has risen to a
certain level by the time of retirement. [1] There are two other ways of looking at a career now, and each one
could be called a “portfolio career”.
The usual meaning of “portfolio” is a collection of drawings, photographs, or documents which, taken together,
represent a person’s work. Artists, photographers, and actors typically compile portfolios to take to job
interviews. [2] They are better than a resume for showing what they have done or what they are capable of
doing.
One meaning of a portfolio career is having a number of part-time jobs or roles at the same time, instead of one
full-time job. These jobs may or may not be in the same field. In fact, it is probably better if they are not. We’ll
see why later. The second meaning of the term is having several full-time jobs in different fields during your
lifetime which have something in common, for example, managing people. At one time it was thought that only
a doctor, for instance, could manage the work of doctors. [3] But recently, there has been a move to see some
skills, such as personnel management, as cutting across fields, so a person could transfer their skills in
management learned in healthcare to, let’s say, education. It is worth saying here that many people in different
professions disagree with this idea, believing that only a person who understands the day-to-day work of a
profession can be a manager in that profession, but it has become common in certain fields in a number of
countries. [4]
Why should there be any advantage in having a number of jobs at the same time or in having a transferable
skill? The issue is that, in today’s world, jobs and even the nature of work itself are changing very fast. People
in many parts of the world can no longer expect to get a job for life in one organization or even one field. One
estimate from experts is that a person graduating from university or college now will work in at least four
different fields during their lifetime.
1. What does the word “compile” probably mean in paragraph 2?
A. copy B. put together C. record D. write
2. What is the primary purpose of making a portfolio in the passage?
A. To collect various job offers B. To display a person's work or capabilities
C. To secure a full-time job in a specific field D. To document academic qualifications
3. What does the writer NOT do in paragraph 3?
A. Define the same term in two ways.
B. Mention an argument against one type of portfolio career.
C. Explain why portfolio careers could be a good idea.
D. Give an example of a skill in a portfolio career.
4. Which word from paragraph 3 means the same as “personnel”?
A. full-time B. people C. portfolio D. work
5. Where should this sentence “At least, that is what the word used to mean” go in the text?
A. [1] B. [2] C. [3] D. [4]
6. The writer thinks that portfolio careers
A. of the first type could be successful, but not the second.
B. were good in the past but not in the fast-changing world of today.
C. protect people from sudden changes in employment opportunities.
D. are only good for people with many interests or talents.
VIII. Read the following passage and choose the correct answer to each of the questions.
Lifelong learning is defined as the process of continuous learning to keep our knowledge and skills updated.
The world we are living in is changing rapidly, so people are encouraged to learn new things their whole life.
Older adults are expected to be lifelong learners so that they are not left behind in today's modern society.
However, there are some obstacles to adult learning that can interrupt the process.
First, ageing is a natural process and will start in early adulthood and middle age. As a result, people will
probably experience some of the effects of ageing such as worsening vision and hearing, and poor memory.
How do these changes affect learners? When older adults decide to continue their education, they may find it
difficult to keep up with younger learners in the same class. Ageing is believed to affect the capacity for
participating in learning activities. Moreover, as it had been a long time since they had studied, older adults
require more time to recall their existing knowledge and skills, and gain any new ones. They may find it
difficult to overcome this challenge and may decide not to continue their studies.
The second challenge to lifelong learners, especially older adults, is that each of them has their own particular
life situation including work or family responsibilities. Many people are in full-time employment, and, in
addition, they may be in charge of childcare, so they may find it hard to make time for classes or assignments.
Those who live with extended family often take on more responsibilities and sometimes become overloaded.
Some people may also face financial difficulties in their life, so earning a living must be their first priority.
Although they may want to continue learning, they will be more concerned about how to make ends meet.
Finally, the decisive factor affecting people's lifelong learning is their motivation and purpose of learning. Older
adults will be willing to continue their studies if they really need to update their knowledge and skills.
Moreover, when they study with other people, they will feel like they belong to a community of learners sharing
the same interests, and will have a strong motivation to learn. Motivation is also the key factor that helps people
overcome many difficulties and continue learning throughout their lives.

IX. Read the following passage about a famous inventor and choose the best answer to each of the
following questions.
Thomas Edison was a man who became world famous for his inventions. However, he had a difficult start in
life and, even when he was successful, he had to work very hard.
Thomas Edison was born in Milan, Ohio, in 1847. He was the seventh and last child—the fourth surviving—of
Samuel Edison, Jr., and Nancy Elliot Edison. As a child, he was often sick and had trouble hearing. Despite his
health issues, he was a curious and bright boy. He loved to read and experiment, often spending hours in his
mother’s library.
Edison had a difficult time in school because he couldn’t hear well, but he loved to learn on his own. He built a
laboratory in the basement of his parents’ house when he was just 10 or 11, and started his own business selling
newspapers, snacks, and candy on trains a year or two later.
In some ways, Edison is remembered as much for his attitude to achievements as for the achievements
themselves. He is well known as the person who made a light bulb that worked well, but before he succeeded in
1879, he had tried over 1,000 different materials to put the electricity through in the bulb. When people asked
him about failing so many times, he said, ‘I didn’t fail. I just found 1,000 ways that didn’t work.’
Edison’s light bulb changed the world by bringing bright light into homes and streets in a very convenient way.
But he didn’t stop there. Before he died in 1931, he registered more than 1,000 inventions, including the
phonograph, which played music, and an early camera which was used to make the very first movies, although
they were only a few minutes long.

Visiting a foreign country is an exciting adventure, especially for a young traveler! It’s a fantastic way to
explore a new culture, meet different people, and gain new perspectives on the world. To make the most of your
journey, here are a few key tips to keep in mind.
Whether it’s trying a local dish, watching a national game, or visiting a beautiful temple high on a hill at
sunrise, be open to experiencing the unique aspects of the culture. This is your chance to step out of your
comfort zone and learn something new!
Before visiting a new country, learn about some of the customs and traditions of the place you’re visiting. [I]
This shows respect and helps you blend in better. Read articles and online reviews on travel websites. Simple
things like knowing how to greet people or dress appropriately can make a big difference in how you’re
received by locals. Also, find out about table manners – how to eat food in public.
While it’s important to be cautious, don’t let fear hold you back from exploring. [II] One piece of advice which
I received is this: after arriving in a new town or city, get a plastic bag from a small local supermarket. Carry
anything valuable that you must have with you in it so that you look like a local person going shopping.
Most good hotels provide a safe in each room where you should keep all your valuables, including your
passport. But always carry a copy of your passport, visa, and any other important documents with you. This
way, if anything gets lost or taken, you’ll have backups to help sort things out. [III] Ask at your hotel reception
for advice on places to go and places to avoid.
It’s easy to get carried away when you are buying things in a foreign currency, so make sure you know the
exchange rate, and always convert prices into dollars before handing over money. Look for student discounts or
special deals for young travelers. [IV] Remember, experiencing a new culture doesn’t have to be expensive.
Indeed, sometimes the best experiences are free!
