Usability Issues in CAPTCHA Design

The document discusses CAPTCHAs, which are tests used to distinguish humans from computers when accessing online services. It provides examples of how CAPTCHAs are used by Google for Gmail accounts and to protect website registrations from bots. The document also examines the usability of CAPTCHAs and proposes that both text-based and other types of CAPTCHAs should be designed to address efficiency, errors, and user satisfaction in order to have better usability.

The nature of CAPTCHAS determines that the following the following usability are applicable to address the efficiency, errors and satisfaction

First, we have systematically examined usability issues that should be addressed in the design of text-based CAPTCHAs Second, we have proposed a simple but novel framework for examining usability issues of CAPTCHAs, and showed that this framework is applicable not only to text-based schemes Overall, the design of CAPTCHA is still an art, rather than a science. It requires considerable study to evolve the design of secure and usable CAPTCHAs into a science.
