DCDA Ash Content Analysis in Sulphuric Acid

- The document discusses analytical procedures followed in the sulphuric acid industry. It focuses on the analysis of raw materials, products, and emissions from a sulphuric acid plant. - Various analytical methods are described to determine the acidity, moisture, ash content of sulfur and the total and free SO3 content of oleum. Additional tests estimate the strength of sulfuric acid from different stages of production. - The results of applying these analytical methods to samples from a sulfuric acid plant are presented and discussed. The quality of raw materials and efficiency of sulfuric acid production are evaluated.

INTRODUCTION OF TOPIC
 SULPHURIC ACID – KING OF ACIDS
Oil of Vitriol
Battery acid
 Sulphuric acid is the largest volume industrial
chemical produced in the world.
 93.98 % H2SO4 – Used in the manufacture of
fertilizers, explosives, dyes, petroleum products, oil
refining and chemical synthesis.
 Raw material - pure sulphur
COMPANY PROFILE
 FACT - Fertilizers And Chemicals Travancore Ltd.
 DCDA Acid plant(1965) – 600 TPD Capacity
 DCDA – Two stages of conversion & Two stages of
absorption
• Efficiency - 99.7%
• Main products of FACT – Ammonia, Sulphuric acid,
Ammonium Sulphate , Caprolactum.
OBJECTIVES
 Quality of raw material, products and the gas
emmissions in sulphuric acid plant has to be assured.
 Analyzed by the presence of acidity, ash and moisture
content.
 Acidity – Causes corrosion in sulphur melting coils.
 Ash & Moisture – Poison the catalyst
 Check whether sulphuric acid produced is efficient for
producing fertilizers like ammonium sulphate and
ammonium phosphate
SULPHURIC ACID PRODUCTIO
METHOD & METHODOLOGIES
 Analysis of sulphur – Determination of Acidity,
Moisture and Ash content.

 Oleum Analysis – Determination of Total & Free SO3

 Estimation of Sulphuric acid strength- ADT,IAT,FAT

DETERMINATION OF ACIDITY
 15 – 20 g powdered sample
 Neutral ethanol is added until the sulphur is
completely wettde by the alcohol.
 Add 50 ml distilled water, shake, allow to stand.
 Titrate with .02 N standard NaOH
 ppm of H2SO4 in sulphur = Titre value × 0.02× 49 × 106
 1000 × wt. sample

 ppm of H2SO4 in clean sulphur = 11.9214 ppm

 ppm of H2SO4 in dirty sulphur = 156.8125
DETERMINATION OF
MOISTURE
 Weigh a P2O5 tube initially.
 Attach the tube to the flow meter using 20 L gas in the
air drying tower.
 After passing the gas , the P2O5 tube is weighed again.
 Moisture in ppm = weight difference × 1000
 volume
 Moisture in ppm = 0.2 ppm
DETERMINATION OF ASH
 Weigh about 20-25 g dried sulphur into a previously
ignited, cooled and weighed crucible & place on a hot
plate – sulphur burns slowly
 Ignite in a muffle furnace at 800⁰C for 1 [Link] and
[Link] the ignition until the weight is constant.
 Ppm ash = weight difference × 106
 weight of sample
 Ppm ash = 56.1069 ppm
OLEUM ANALYSIS
 To determine the % of total and free SO3
 Using a previously weighed spherical glass ampoule.
 % Total SO3 = Titre value × 4
 weight of sample
 = 86.02%
 % Free SO3 = 23.89%
SULPHURIC ACID STRENGTH
 %H2SO4 = Titrevalue× N of NaOH ×49 × 100
 100 [Link] sample
 % H2SO4 in ADT = 96%
 % H2SO4 in IAT = 98.1%
 % H2SO4 in FAT = 98.1%
