Making a living from art is hard work

A 360º campaign to improve the rights of visual artists

The Association of Contemporary Spanish Artists commissioned me to create a campaign to pressure the Spanish government to improve working conditions for visual artists through a legal instrument called the Artist Statute.
As there wasn't much of a budget, I took on all the tasks myself, starting with the project brief

that would guide us on the path to making this a success. The campaign ended with more than 10,000 signatures collected in less than three weeks, which was a complete success and would serve as a starting point for continuing to pressure the government through all the people who signed.

In addition to working on the graphic design, and after three tests to achieve the final style, I also created the basic manifesto that people would have to sign (it was later corrected by the clients and their lawyers), I set up the signature platform where people would have to go to support us,

and I created the campaign calendar, marking when the messages would be launched, on which channels, and who we would ask personally to help us spread the campaign, sending messages via WhatsApp or DMs on Instagram.

For the second phase of the campaign, when we considered that we had already reached the maximum number of visual artists we could access through our networks, we asked the artist and influencer Rocío Quillahuaman to make a

video in her own style, showing the problems of being an artist in Spain and inviting her followers (more than 200k) to sign the manifesto, thus ensuring that our campaign broke out of the artist bubble and also reached consumers of art and culture.

The final part of the campaign had to have a physical component, outside of social media. Taking advantage of Spain's most important art fair, ARCO, we wanted to organize an event inviting everyone who had signed the manifesto. At that time, there were about 10,000 people. But a problem arose between the organizations and we were unable to do so. We changed the plan

to adapt to the resources we had at the time, and we got a stand at the fair, decorated it with images from the campaign, and invited everyone who stopped by to sign the manifesto. This marked the end of the first phase of the campaign, and we hope to find more resources to continue with it until we get the pending measures of the Artist Statute approved.
