vi'yan is varang's son, whom she had a few years after establishing herself as dual clan leader and taking power. as default heir, vi'yan has always been hassled by his mother to follow closely in her footsteps. however, vi'yan does not want the title nor does he believe in varang's ideals. deep down, he yearns for an escape, but he's fearful of what may be of him if he tries to flee, so he reluctantly stays under his mother's rule like the rest of the Mangkwan. then, during a raid on the Tlalim, the wind traders, vi'yan takes a hit that renders both him and his ikran out of commission. the streams of the forest end up carrying him out to sea where the his mangkwan paint and ash wash away. vi'yan ends up near the shores of awa'atlu and is discovered by the metkayina. believing him to be an ordinary forest na'vi, they take the boy back to their island. seeing this rescue as his only chance for complete escape, vi'yan lies and says that he has no memory of what happened. olo'eyktan tonowari puts him under the watchful eye of the metkayina's own heir, aonung, as a result. while both boys initially just view each other as a means to an end, vi'yan using aonung for protection while he tries to come up with a more full proof plan and aonung seeing vi'yan as nothing more than a way to prove his maturity and potential, they eventually develop a bond amidst the ongoing war that becomes unbreakable.
