LIGTING DESIGN

CONCEPT OF LIGHTING AS A SYSTEM

Lighting design requires consideration of

• the amount of functional light provided,
• the energy consumed,
• the aesthetic impact
Architectural lighting design focuses on three fundamental aspects of the illumination
of buildings or spaces.
• The first is the aesthetic appeal of a building, an aspect particularly important in the
illumination of retail environments.
• Secondly, the ergonomic aspect: the measure of how much of a function the lighting
plays.
• Thirdly is the energy efficiency issue to ensure that light is not wasted by over-
illumination, either by illuminating vacant spaces unnecessarily or by providing more
light than needed for the aesthetics or the task.
Light defines space, enhances color and reveals the details of texture and form
The lighting design should take into consideration the following aspects:
1. ILLUMINATION LEVEL (right quantity of light)
2. PROPER PLACEMENT OF LUMINAIRE ( proper location)
3. WITH EFFICIENT INTEGRATED CONTROLS
Lighting design can be governed on the basis of following criteria's
1. LIGHT DISTRIBUTION
 General lighting /ambient lighting
 Task lighting
 Accent lighting
2. LIGHTING QUALITY AND QUANTITY
A. Illumination levels B. Adaptation levels
3. LIGHTING ON PEOPLE AND OBJECT
GENERAL/AMBIENT LIGHTING

• General lighting is the main source of illumination in a space

• General lighting is used to provide illumination over a
whole floor area with a high degree of uniformity.
• This enables people, plants, furniture and so on to be
positioned anywhere in the space and easily moved without
needing to change the lighting array.

Also known as background or ‘mood’ lighting, ambient

lighting creates a soft glow that gently illuminates
an area without causing glare.
Light fixtures such as upward facing wall lights can be effective
at creating ambient lighting.
Ambient lighting is often provided by traditional pendant type
fixtures, down lights, chandeliers, or ceiling mounted fixtures
etc.
TASK LIGHTING

• Task lighting is focused, local lighting used to illuminate

a specific area where a task is, or may be, performed.
• It is used as a contrasting light, which produces less
general glare than if brighter lights were used to light an
entire room.
• Necessary to the functioning of a space, it is important to
use energy efficient sources to reduce operating costs.
• Task lighting is most effective when used as a
supplement to general lighting in workspaces,
conference areas and on counter tops.
• It can be provided by recessed and track lighting,
pendant lighting and undercabinet lighting, as well as by
portable floor and desk lamps
• Effective task lighting should eliminate shadows on the
specific illuminated area, while preventing glare from
the lamp or off surfaces.
ACCENT LIGHTING

• Accent lighting creates a dramatic emphasis on the space using a focused,

or point, light source or sources.
• It adds depth, contrast and creates a focal point for items to be displayed; it
highlights shape, texture, finish and colour.
• If this light is directed indistinctly, the end result may have many unwanted
shadows obstructing the details of the highlighted items as well as
distracting glare.
• The key is to make this illumination more precise and of higher intensity
than the surrounding ambient light.
• To be effective, accent lighting requires as least 3-times as much light on the
focal point as the general lighting surrounding it.
• Accent lighting is usually provided by recessed and track lighting or wall-
mounted picture lights
Light defines space, enhances color and reveals the details of texture and form
Ambient Lighting

Also known as general lighting, ambient light is an even

layer of illumination that fills the whole room. This type
of light is used to safely avoid furniture when walking
around the room, searching for a lost remote, or for
social activities like entertaining guests or playing board
games. Ambient lighting also helps to offset the
brightness from task lights, computer screens, and TVs
in order to avoid glare and ease strain on the eyes.

The most efficient way to add ambient light to a living

room is with ceiling lighting. A flush mount or semi-flush
mount ceiling light centered in the room will cast
diffused light evenly throughout the space. A chandelier
or large, decorative pendant light functions the same as
a close-to- ceiling fixture; and it will add a compelling,
design statement as long as the room has the ceiling
height to accommodate it.
Table lamps or floor lamps with an adjustable head
are the ideal fixtures for providing task lighting in
living rooms. For optimum performance, a reading
table lamp should be positioned next to a sofa or
lounge chair to cast light directly on whatever is being
read or worked on. The same placement is ideal for a
reading floor lamp or an arc floor lamp; however,
they can also be positioned behind seating due to
their larger size.

How to Light a Modern Bedroom

Of all the rooms in your home, your

bedroom is probably the only one you
spend time in when its completely dark,
completely bright and completely
somewhere in between. So, getting your
bedroom lighting design just right is
essential to making it a comfortable place
to rest your head at night, to rise and
shine each morning and to go about your
day.
While ambient lighting is used to navigate
throughout the kitchen, it often leaves
shadows under cabinets, in areas that
require more focus.
With the help of undercabinet task lighting,
work surfaces and cabinetry are properly
illuminated so you can safely prepare meals,
read recipes, and easily spot ingredients on
a shelf. • Common kitchen under-cabinet
lighting options include: • Strip Lights:
Versatile and great for illuminating a cabinets
interior, especially low cabinets that hardly
receive any ambient lighting. LED strip lights
are also used under the cabinet to fully
illuminate counter spaces. • Puck Lights:
Round and oval, puck lights are great mood
lights and can be used to illuminate
countertops in the form of a scallop, spot or
pool of light.
CHECK LIST FOR GOOD LIGHTING
HOSPITAL LIGHTING
Hospital lighting is an important part of hospital construction and
management. It plays an important role in the realization of health care and
treatment effect, rehabilitation of patients and relationship between
doctors and patients, hospital operation management and cost control.
LIGHTING IN HOSPITALS ……..AN INTEGRATED APPROACH
Performance: To provide an optimal lighting solution. In
hospitals, clinics and care homes, this can lead to less fatigue,
quicker reactions and task completion with fewer mistakes
resulting in higher standards of care.

Efficiency: Efficiency is concerned with the energy

consumption, economics and practical aspects of a lighting
installation. Thorn lighting products are carefully engineered
and manufactured to produce practical, easy to maintain
solutions that consume the least possible power and provide
long-life, trouble-free solutions

Comfort: The ability to give people satisfaction and

stimulation. Lighting influences concentration and mood.
Comfort is concerned with atmosphere, reassurance, and in the
healthcare environment, the well-being of the patient.
Patients Ward Light
Required Lux level for patients Ward luminaire is 150 to 200 Lux (maximum) and 20 to 50 Lux (minimum)

Conditions for Patients Ward Luminaire Installation

Lux level varies patient to patient
CCT must be 4000 K
Smooth or cool light colour
No glare
Uniform lumen distribution

Lights used in patients wards are FTL, CFL, and LED Lamps etc.
OPERATION THEATRE LUMINAIRE
Operation Theater Luminaires use halogen lamps with proper filters to give cold bluish white light, almost similar to natural
light which is ideal for surgeries of all types.

Functions of Operation Theater Luminaire are given below:

• Shadow free lighting due to large-area polygon reflector;

• Continuous adaptation of light intensity and illuminated
field size to the requirements of the operating area;
• High-performance thermo-absorbing filter system is used
for color temperatures similar to daylight with brilliant color
rendition;
• The elimination of unwanted thermal radiation prevents
tissue desiccation and provides cool comfort working
beneath the light;
• No possible loss of light due to built-in reserve light;
