THE JOURNAL OF AUSTRALIAN CERAMICS

The Journal of Australian Ceramics (JAC) is a valuable resource for professional and amateur ceramicists, teachers and students at all levels, galleries, arts administrators, curators, buyers and collectors.

Published three times per year – 1 April, 17 July and 20 November – in both print and digital formats, we feature profiles on ceramicists, potters and makers; reviews of ceramic exhibitions and books; previews of upcoming events; critical commentaries; research papers; and community reports.

In each issue we pick a focus area and seek new stories to highlight the ceramics community and inquire into current topics in fresh ways.

The purpose of the Journal is to inspire, educate, support makers, and strengthen the field. We investigate current issues, new points of view, and technical developments, to connect readers to the larger ceramics community.

Formerly known as Pottery in Australia (PIA), the magazine was first published in May 1962 (Vol 1, No 1). In 2022, The Journal of Australian Ceramics celebrated its 60th anniversary.

The JAC is a resource of insights, capturing narratives surrounding ceramics in Australia. It platforms the unique stories of practitioners who contribute to this vibrant field, showcasing their creative processes, inspirations, and the cultural significance of their work. The JAC also highlights innovative techniques and contemporary trends in ceramic art, exploring how traditional practices are being reinterpreted in modern contexts and examining the historical evolution of ceramics in Australia.

Through a myriad of voices and perspectives, the JAC informs and inspires, encouraging dialogue and exploration within the ceramics field and in the broader arts community. It is an invaluable resource for anyone interested in the intersection of culture, creativity, critical inquiry, and new techniques in ceramics in Australia.

The Australian Ceramics Association acknowledges the Traditional Owners of Country throughout Australia and First Nations Peoples’ connections to land, sea, and sky.

We recognise that sovereignty was never ceded and that we are on stolen land. We pay our respect to Elders past, present, and emerging, and to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders who engage with the Association, our events, and our programs.

As we gather to listen and speak we are doing so in the home of one of the longest continuous cultures of shared oral storytelling, material wisdom, and artmaking on this planet.
