CHAPTER III

METHODOLOGY

This chapter presents the discussion on the research design, respondents of the study,
research instruments, the data gathering procedure, validation of the instrument, methods of
scoring and interpretation and statistical tool to be used to analyze the data.

Research Design

This study used the descriptive research design. This design answers who, what, where,
when and how questions related to a particular research problem. This design is used to obtain
information about the present situation to acquire an understanding of a certain phenomenon
(Cristobal & De La Cruz-Cristobal, 2017).

It is used to depict the participant’s answer through the help of the given questionnaire. A
descriptive design was used in order to reach its objective, to describe the respondent’s perceived
impacts by sports to the development of the social skills of students.

Respondents of the Study

The research was conducted at Liceo del Verbo Divino during the school year 2018-2019
at Tacloban City, Leyte.

The respondents of this study are the students from grade 12 Senior High School.
Researcher will randomly select 60 (26%) students out of two hundred twenty-nine (229) from
Grade 12 Senior High School Students for the school year 2018-2019. According to Cristobal
and De La Cruz-Cristobal, for a descriptive research, 10% to 20% could be considered as an
acceptable sample size for this type of research, hence the percentage of respondents was set to
26%.

Sampling Method

The researcher made use of the simple random sampling method in the selection of the
respondents. This is a method of selecting samples in which all members of the population are
given the equal chance of being chosen. It is a balanced way of selection, as samples are picked
by chance (Cristobal & De La Cruz-Cristobal, 2017). Senior high school students in the S.Y.
2018-2019 became the respondents of the study.

Research Instrument

The researcher utilized one instrument to gather the needed data for this study in order to
respond to the sub-problems in this study, only the survey questionnaire.

Survey Questionnaire. A close-ended questionnaire was used as the data gathering

instrument to gather information and to attain the objective of the study regarding to the
perceived impacts of sports towards the development of social skills of students. The
questionnaires contained questions to find out the perceived effects of sports to the development
of social skills of student. This was the questionnaire that can gather data from the student’s
perception from the senior high department of Liceo del Verbo Divino, Tacloban City.

Data Gathering Procedure

In gathering data, the researcher will ask permission from the School Coordinator of
Liceo del Verbo Divino through a formal communication. The teacher’s and students’
permission will also be secured.
The researcher will personally administer the research instruments. The survey
questionnaire will be given to the respondents and the instruction will be given to them by the
researcher before answering it.

Method of Scoring and Interpretation

The data gathered through the survey questionnaires where scored, analyze and interpret
as follows.

All questions from number 1 to 10 will be scored as follows.

Statistical Treatment of the Data

To determine the number of respondents, the formula below was used:

x ∙ n=r

Where:

x = given percentage quantity

n = total number of respondents

r = number of respondents

To determine the percentage value, the formula below was used:

x
×100=¿ p
n

Where:
x= given quantity

n= total amount

p = percentage of the quantity compared to the total

All statistical analyses were done using manual computations which is then checked twice.

Ethical Consideration

The researchers secured a letter of permission from the principal and as well from the
Senior High School coordinators of Liceo del Verbo Divino to allow the researchers to conduct
their study on the said school. With the approval, the survey questionnaires were distributed to
the respondents.

The ethical considerations in conducting the study at Liceo del Verbo Divino include securing permission from both the school principal and the Senior High School coordinators, as well as obtaining consent from teachers and students. These steps are important to ensure the research respects the institution's protocols and the participants' rights. Ethical considerations are crucial for maintaining trust and integrity in the research process, and they help avoid any potential harm or discomfort to participants .

Enhancing the reliability of data interpretation in survey-based studies could involve triangulation, where data is cross-verified with additional methods such as interviews or focus groups. This approach can validate the results and provide comprehensive insights. Additionally, employing statistical software for data analysis can reduce human error and increase accuracy. Conducting pilot tests to refine questionnaires and employing peer review processes to check for biases can also enhance reliability .

The adequacy of the sample size, which comprises 26% of the student population, can be considered appropriate for a descriptive study based on Cristobal and De La Cruz-Cristobal's recommendation of a 10-20% sample. However, while the sample size meets and exceeds the general guideline, the relatively small absolute number of respondents (60 students) might limit the depth and diversity of findings. A larger sample could potentially yield more nuanced insights and increase the confidence in generalizability of the results to the entire student body .

Manual computation of statistical analyses can lead to several challenges, including human errors in calculation, time inefficiency, and difficulties in handling complex datasets or cross-tabulations. These issues could affect the study's outcomes by introducing inaccuracies in the data interpretation, which might lead to incorrect conclusions about the perceived impacts of sports on students' social skills. Furthermore, manual processes can limit the researcher’s ability to perform more sophisticated statistical analysis that could provide deeper insights .

The survey questionnaire effectively aligns with the study's objective to understand students' perceptions because it allows for the systematic collection of data on their views regarding how sports impact social skills. By using structured questions, the questionnaire facilitates the gathering of consistent and comparable data across a large group, thereby supporting the study's goal of describing perceived impacts. Its close-ended format ensures focused responses, aiding in the efficient analysis and understanding of trends in perceptions .

Relying solely on a close-ended questionnaire for data collection may limit the depth of information gathered, as it restricts respondents to predefined answer choices. This approach might not capture the nuances of participants' experiences and perceptions regarding the impact of sports on their social skills. Additionally, it could overlook unexpected insights that open-ended questions might reveal, possibly leading to a shallow understanding of the topic. Thus, while efficient, this method might compromise the richness and complexity of the data collected .

Choosing Liceo del Verbo Divino as the research location focuses the study on a specific context, thereby ensuring detailed and relevant data collection that accurately reflects these students' perceptions. However, this choice might limit the generalizability as the findings are specific to this institution's environment and demographics, potentially differing from other schools. Consequently, while the study provides valuable insights, caution should be exercised when applying the results to broader contexts without supporting data from more diverse samples .

Statistical tools play a crucial role in analyzing data collected through survey questionnaires by enabling the researcher to summarize, interpret, and draw conclusions from the responses. The use of these tools helps in assigning numerical values to responses, such as using scores from 1 to 4 based on the level of agreement, which facilitates quantitative analysis. This process allows researchers to discern patterns and measure the perceived impact of sports on students' social skills in a systematic and statistically valid manner .

The descriptive research design aids in understanding the impacts of sports on students' social skills development by providing a structured way to answer who, what, where, when, and how questions about the research problem. This approach enables researchers to gather comprehensive data about the current situation and the respondents' perceptions, which are crucial for describing the effects of sports on social skills. By focusing on the respondents from Liceo del Verbo Divino, the study can accurately depict these impacts through their answers to structured survey questions .

Using simple random sampling in this study's methodology is significant because it provides each member of the population an equal chance of being selected, which ensures that the sample is representative of the broader student population. This method reduces bias in the sample selection process, thereby enhancing the validity and generalizability of the study's results. By randomly selecting 60 students from Grade 12, the methodology ensures a balanced and fair representation, thereby increasing the reliability of findings regarding the perceived impacts of sports on social skills .
